On the 6th April 2018, a new legislation was put in place in the UK concerning the heating and installation industry. And it included some big changes.
Boiler Plus was the name given to the new regulations, which were introduced by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The changes addressed the energy efficiency of heating systems and raised the bar for both manufacturers and installers.
What Changes Came with the Boiler Plus Legislation?
- Gas boiler performance: space heating efficiency of new boilers can no longer be lower than ErP 92%
- All gas and oil boiler installations require time and temperature control
- Combi boiler installations must include at least one of the following: smart control functions, weather compensation, load compensation or flue gas heat recovery
The biggest change was to the minimum performance standard for domestic gas boilers. With all boilers manufactured and installed to be set at 92% ErP.
Why the Boiler Plus Legislation Was Introduced
The main motivation behind these changes were to phase out inefficient boilers and reduce carbon emissions, enabling the UK to be more in line with targets set by the EU.
The changes were just a small part of a wider plan known as the Government’s Clean Growth Strategy, which is aiming to combat climate change and provide greater comfort and lower energy bills for homes in the UK.
What Impact Does Boiler Plus Have on Homeowners?
It’s against the law for installers to install a boiler that does not meet the new building regulations, and they may face prosecution by building control.
A homeowner who knowingly allows non-compliant work to be carried out could face prosecution themselves and receive fines of up to £5,000.
