If you’re considering whether to install a new boiler, you’ll want to plan when is best to do the job. While boilers tend to last for many years, when the time does come to replace one it can be a big task.
Before booking an engineer to complete the work, you’ll want to know what to expect so that you can plan for minimum disruption.
Not only can installing a new boiler take a bit of time, and require your heating and hot water to be switched off, it may also be messy.
The length of time it takes to install a new boiler will depend on several factors, including:
- Whether the new boiler is a like-for-like replacement
- Whether the boiler is to be installed in the same location as the old one
- The type of boiler being installed
- Whether there are any complications
- Whether you’re having your system flushed out
Depending on the details of your new boiler installation, the project could take any length of time from several hours to a few days.
Like-for-like replacements
Replacing your existing boiler with the same, or a similar, model is the quickest and easiest type of installation.
Typically, this type of job doesn’t take longer than a day and can often be completed in between four and six hours.
Replacing a traditional boiler with a combi boiler
Replacing an old boiler with a modern combi one tends to be a much bigger job.
One reason for this is older systems require water tanks that are no longer needed when you switch to a combi boiler.
A new combi boiler is also likely to require a whole new lot of pipework, which can involve pulling up floorboards, drilling into walls and other intrusive and messy work.
Generally, upgrading your system will take two to three days to complete.
Moving your boiler
If your existing boiler is in an inconvenient location, then replacing or upgrading it provides a perfect opportunity to relocate it to another part of your property.
Moving a boiler your home requires a substantial amount of extra work though, with the most time-consuming and disruptive part of the job likely to be installing new pipework.
Depending on how far the boiler is being moved, you can expect switching it to a new location to add at least half a day onto the project’s timescale.
Power flushing
While having a new boiler installed, many people opt to have their existing system flushed out with chemicals to remove debris and ensure the new boiler can perform at its best.
If you choose to include this service in your installation, it is likely to add another couple of hours to the total installation time.
