The combi boiler is a boiler that provides both hot water and central heating in one compact unit.
Modern boilers use something called condensing technology which heats the water that travels through the system by latent heat from the flue gases. A gas burner in the combi boiler is ignited. The heat from the flame is transferred via the main heat exchanger to the primary circuit, at which point the heat is moved to either directly to the radiators or to your hot water taps via a plate heat exchanger.
Why should I install a combi boiler?
Combi boilers have become increasingly popular because they don’t take up much space. This is because you don’t need a tank to store the water for heating and because they are easy to control. People love the fact that they are energy efficient and can reduce household bills and provide hot water on demand. Unlike system boilers and regular boilers, which heat and store quantities of water in advance, combi boilers heat water when it is needed. A combi boiler can therefore provide hot water when you want it.
How is a combi boiler installed?
Your boiler engineer will first do something called a powerflush. This will ensure that your heating system is free of any debris, such as rust or limescale. Doing this makes it easy for the hot water to flow around the radiators without any blockages occurring. The powerflush is an important step and could take the best part of a day to complete.
If you are merely having your boiler swapped for an updated model then the engineer may be able to complete your combi boiler installation in a day, however, the job is likely to take longer especially if you are having your boiler moved to a different location and a full central heating replacement.
After the boiler is fitted, the engineer will show you how to use the controls and register the installation with the manufacturer. You will also get a Building Regulations Certificate sent to you through the post.
How much does combi boiler installation cost?
This depends on the type of job and whether the engineer is doing a like-for-like swap. Prices will start at around £1,000 plus the cost of the boiler.
