How does a combi boiler work?

A combi boiler can help save space in your home and money off your energy bills, but what is it and how does it work?

Updating an old boiler can be expensive, so you’ll want to make sure you choose the most suitable new make and model for your home and requirements.

If you’re thinking about swapping an old conventional boiler for a new combi one you can rest assured it is generally always a reliable, practical and energy-saving investment.

What is a combi boiler?

Old conventional boilers tend to take up a lot of space in the house because they need multiple water tanks and a lot of pipework.

A combination boiler operates both your home’s central heating and hot water from a single unit.

How do combi boilers work?

Rather than heating and then storing water like a conventional boiler, combination boilers instantly heat water from the mains as and when required – making them more efficient.

Combi boilers contain two different heat exchangers, one for your home’s hot water and another for its central heating. Heat can then be directed to one or the other at any one time, but never to both simultaneously.

Central heating

A combi boiler’s primary heat exchanger is used to heat water for your radiators. It fires up and heats the water before sending it to the radiators. The boiler then keeps it at a consistent temperature, recycling the same water repeatedly.

The system uses a thermostat to regulate your central heating’s temperature and save energy.

Hot water

In homes with combi boilers, when a hot tap is turned on the central heating is paused while the domestic water supply is diverted. As soon as it is turned off, that heat is diverted back again to the radiators.

Benefits of combination boilers

Combi boilers are the most popular type of boiler in the UK. Providing that your home has a good mains water pressure, a combination boiler is likely to be a convenient, reliable and cost-effective option for you.

Benefits of combi boilers over old style boilers include:

  • Save space in your home
  • Reliable
  • More energy efficient, saving you money on your bills
  • Better for the environment
  • Mains pressure water means powerful showers
  • Adds value to your home
