Tips for Avoiding a Cowboy Engineer

Unfortunately, many people find out too late that they have hired the wrong plumber or heating engineer.

We have all heard stories where people have spent their hard earned money to get a job done for it all to go wrong, leaving them stressed and out of pocket.

In the UK, there is no fixed pricing structure in the plumbing industry so traders can charge customers virtually whatever they like and the standard of work can vary considerably, sometime with disastrous consequences.

So, how can we ensure we hire the right person for the job?

At Range Plumbing and Heating we have put together some tips to help you avoid those ‘cowboy engineers’.

1:  Get recommendations from friends, relatives or work colleagues who have recently had work done or failing that ask your local Plumbers Merchants.

2: Arrange appointments with at least 3 of these recommendations to come and assess the work. Immediately cross off your list anyone who doesn’t show up.

4: Ask for a detailed written estimate which clearly states the work to be carried out and how much it will cost including vat, if applicable.  Be wary of brief estimates that have too little detail or are not on company stationery.

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask for references from people they have previously done work for and follow up with a phone call or go to view the work.

6: Prices can vary considerably, but cheapest is not always best. You want a good job doing using quality products.

7: Read through the estimate thoroughly. If you have any queries, ask more questions.

8: Never pay out any money before work starts. Sometimes a deposit is required, but agree to pay the deposit the day they start work. Never pay for the whole job until after it has been completed and tested. It is not unreasonable for an engineer to wait a short time for final payment so you have had the opportunity to see if their work is satisfactory.

Range Plumbing and Heating is trusted by many of its customers, they get a lot of repeat business and recommendations from customers. For example:-
